J. B. Whipple, Esq.,
Manager Young's Hotel,
Boston, Mass.

Dear Sir:-- We on your letter of recommendation engaged Mr. Colton as our Chef, and advanced him his fare to come out here. He has been under the influence of liquor twice, and has not been with us ten days. Last night he was not around until half past six. I also find he has called on our butchers and demanded a commission on purchases made.

As we engaged him solely on your letter, and as we know you would not give such a letter to one whom you thought did not deserve it, we think it is due you to be informed of the facts mentioned above, so you will not be led into recommending him for another position. We have as yet made no change, and would not want you to make public these facts for the present, but so soon as we can find a good man Mr. Colton will be relieved.

Yours truly,
E.S. Babcock
